Chapter 6: 12,13
6:12-13: "The altar shall be kept
burning on it. It shall not go out, but the priest shall burn wood on it
every morning; and he shall lay out the burnt offering on it, and offer
up in smoke the fat portions of the peace offerings on it. Fire shall be
kept burning continually on the altar; it is not to go out." Leviticus
6:12-13
This text focuses on God's command to the priests to maintain the fire
of the altar of sacrifice. Leviticus focuses mainly on the particulars
associated with the operation of the Tabernacle. It details the duties
of the priests and the rituals and ceremonies associated with the sacrifices.
This passage focues on the command to the priests to maintain the fire
of the altar continuously. God himself lit the fireThey were ordered to
make sure that it never burned out. The priests took that responsibility
seriously. The organized themselves to maintainthe fire 24 hours a day
seven days a week. When the temple was build by Solomon, God once again
lit the fire (2 Chroicles 7:1) Their vigil was maintained continuously
for 800 years until the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians.
