Are there certain places
or things that you consider special? What makes your special place
sacred or special to you? Generally, those places that we consider
special relate to unique experiences that have happened in our lives
at a specific time and moment. Newly weds consider the site of their
honeymoons or the places where they first met as special places. Athletes
revisit the site of great victories and the sight of the large stadiums
where they were cheered in victory renews floods of memories of special
moments. While there are many places and occasions that we considered
momentous, there are other places that are more personal. They reflect
points in our lives when our perception, direction or sense of security
was unalterably challenged or changed. These are the places where
we met our own fallibility and stood in the shadow of a God who is
bigger than ourselves. They became more than special; they became sacred.
However, When the families of those who were
victims of the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center tragedy visit
the site it is more than special to them. When they stand at the memorials
erected for over 2000 people who lost their lives to terrorists, they
are standing on hallowed ground.
